How Nolwazi protects personal information.

Nolwazi is a South African digital education platform providing learning assistance, homework support, AI-assisted educational tools, South African Sign Language resources, video learning services, classroom tools and educator-led assessment features.

This Privacy Policy explains how Nolwazi collects, uses, stores, protects and shares personal information when learners, parents, guardians, teachers, educators and other users interact with the platform.

We process personal information in accordance with applicable South African law, including the Protection of Personal Information Act 4 of 2013 ("POPIA").

3. Where This Policy Applies
Accounts, learning and classroom services.
This Policy applies when you register, sign in, use learning tools, scan or upload educational material, use AI features, use Teacher & Parent's Corner, connect with an educator, participate in assignments or formal tests, view progress information, use Edufleex or SASL content, purchase access, contact us, or otherwise use Nolwazi.
4. Account Information
Information used to create and secure accounts.

Depending on the account type, we may process:

  • Name and surname
  • Email address and mobile number where supplied
  • Username, account identifier and role
  • Grade, curriculum and subject preferences
  • Email-verification and authentication status
  • Profile settings and preferences

Passwords are handled through our authentication infrastructure and are not stored by Nolwazi in readable plain-text form.

5. Learner Information
Academic, curriculum and learning information.
  • Grade, subjects and curriculum selections
  • Questions, homework and learning requests
  • Uploaded educational documents, photographs and scans
  • AI-assisted learning interactions
  • Quiz, assignment and formal-test activity
  • Scores, feedback and progress information
  • Learning history and feature usage where required to provide the service
6. Teacher and Parent Information
Information used by Teacher & Parent's Corner.

Educator accounts may process information such as account role, educator code, classes, linked learners, assignments, tests, marking activity, feedback and classroom-management information.

Parent accounts using educator features may process similar classroom information where those features are available and the parent is authorised to work with the learner concerned.

7. Educator Codes and Learner Connections
How educator-to-learner relationships are recorded.

Nolwazi may generate educator codes that learners use to establish a connection with a teacher or parent acting as an educator.

We record the identity of the connected accounts, connection status and related classroom information so the platform can provide schoolwork, assessments, marking and progress features.

Connections are role- and relationship-based. An educator connection does not by itself provide unrestricted access to everything in a learner's account.

8. Classes, Assignments and Formal Tests
Educational records created in the classroom system.

Teacher & Parent's Corner may process class membership, assignment instructions, questions, due dates, test durations, learner answers, submission times, marks, feedback and assessment status.

Timed tests may record when a test starts, its expiry time and when answers are saved or submitted.

9. Progress and Assessment Records
Building the learner's educational progress history.
Nolwazi may combine relevant quiz and educator-assessment results to generate progress information, including subject performance, assessment history, scores and learning trends.
10. Children's Personal Information
Additional protection for younger users.

Many Nolwazi users are children. We recognise that children's personal information requires special protection.

We process children's information only where lawful under POPIA, including where the necessary consent of a competent person has been obtained or another lawful basis or authorisation applies.

Parents, guardians and educators should help children avoid sharing unnecessary identity, financial, residential or other sensitive information through learning tools.

11. Managed Child Access
Child access administered through a parent account.
Where Nolwazi offers managed-child access, a parent may receive separate child login credentials for the designated child. These credentials should be kept secure and used only by the authorised child. Parent and child usage may remain linked for subscription and account-administration purposes.
12. Homework Scanning and Uploads
Processing educational images and documents.

When educational material is scanned or uploaded, Nolwazi processes the content to provide the requested learning service.

Users should avoid uploading unnecessary personal information such as identity documents, bank information, home addresses, medical records or information about third parties that is unrelated to the learning task.

13. AI-Assisted Educational Services
How information may be processed by AI.

Certain Nolwazi features use artificial intelligence to analyse educational questions, documents and instructions, generate learning assistance, and assist educators in preparing educational material.

Only information reasonably required to perform the requested function should be submitted. AI-generated educational content may contain errors and should be reviewed appropriately.

14. Automated Scoring and Educator Review
How formal-test results may be calculated.
Objective assessment questions may be scored automatically. Questions requiring human judgment may remain pending until reviewed and marked by the educator. Automated educational scoring is used for learning purposes and is not intended to make legal or similarly significant decisions about a user.
15. Information Collected Automatically
Security, device and diagnostic information.
We may collect IP address, browser and device information, timestamps, authentication events, technical logs, security events and performance diagnostics where reasonably necessary to operate, secure and improve the platform.
16. Cookies and Similar Technologies
Sessions and platform preferences.
Nolwazi uses cookies and similar technologies where necessary to maintain secure sessions, remember preferences, support authentication and understand technical platform performance.
17. How We Use Personal Information

18. Authentication and Account Security
Protecting access to Nolwazi.
Nolwazi may use email verification, role checks, account identifiers, login credentials and other security controls. Users must protect passwords, verification links, child login credentials and other access information.
19. Payments and Transaction Information
Information required for billing and access.
Where payment services are used, payment providers process payment credentials through their own secure systems. Nolwazi may retain transaction references, amounts, status, subscription information and related support records. Nolwazi does not need to store complete card details to provide its service.
20. Service Providers
Infrastructure needed to operate Nolwazi.
We may use service providers for hosting, authentication, databases, cloud infrastructure, AI processing, email delivery, payment processing, security and related technical services. Providers are given information only as reasonably necessary for the relevant service and are expected to process it subject to applicable privacy and security obligations.
21. What Connected Educators May See
Role-based educational visibility.

A connected educator may be able to view information required for classroom features, such as learner identity, class membership, assigned work, submissions, test results, educator feedback and relevant progress information.

An educator connection does not automatically grant access to the learner's password, complete payment credentials, unrelated account information or unrelated private interactions that the platform does not expose through educator functionality.

22. When We May Share Information
Controlled disclosures.
Nolwazi does not sell personal information. Information may be disclosed to authorised connected users, contracted service providers, professional advisers, schools or sponsoring organisations where appropriate, or regulators and law-enforcement authorities where disclosure is required or permitted by law.
23. International Processing
Cloud services outside South Africa.
Cloud and technology providers may process information outside South Africa. Where personal information is transferred across borders, Nolwazi seeks to do so in accordance with POPIA, including the requirements applicable to transborder information flows.
24. Information Security
Technical and organisational safeguards.
We take reasonable technical and organisational measures to protect information, including access controls, authentication, security rules, logging and other safeguards appropriate to the platform. No internet-based service can guarantee absolute security.
25. Security Compromises
Incident response.
Where there are reasonable grounds to believe personal information has been accessed or acquired by an unauthorised person, Nolwazi will investigate and take the notification and remedial steps required by applicable law.
26. Retention of Information
How long records are kept.
We retain personal information only for as long as reasonably necessary for the purpose for which it was collected, to maintain legitimate educational and transaction records, resolve disputes, meet security needs or satisfy legal obligations. Information may then be deleted, destroyed or de-identified where appropriate.
27. Disconnecting an Educator
What happens when a connection ends.
Ending an educator connection prevents future access that depends on that active relationship. Historical assignments, submissions, marks, feedback or audit information may be retained where reasonably necessary for educational records, security, dispute resolution or legal compliance.
28. Account Closure
Requests to close or delete an account.
Users may request account closure or deletion. Certain information may be retained where required or permitted by law, or where reasonably necessary for accounting, fraud prevention, security, dispute resolution or other legitimate record-keeping purposes.
29. Your Rights Under POPIA
Access, correction, objection and deletion rights.
Subject to POPIA and applicable limitations, data subjects may request access to personal information, request correction or deletion, object to certain processing, withdraw consent where processing depends on consent, and lodge a complaint with the Information Regulator.
30. Direct Marketing
Educational and promotional communications.
Where permitted by law, Nolwazi may send information about its educational services, platform updates or promotions. Marketing communications will include an appropriate way to opt out where required.
31. Schools, Sponsors and Educational Programmes
Access funded or supported by organisations.
Where a school, company, government body or other organisation sponsors access, sponsorship does not automatically give that organisation unrestricted access to a learner's private information. Any information shared will depend on the programme, lawful purpose, applicable permissions and relevant notices.
32. Edufleex, SASL and Other Learning Services
Additional educational experiences.
Edufleex and other learning services may process viewing activity, subject selections and progress where needed to deliver the service. Viewing SASL resources generally involves standard account and technical information unless an interactive feature requires additional information.
33. Third-Party Links
External websites and services.
Nolwazi may contain links to third-party websites or services. Their privacy practices are governed by their own policies, and users should review those policies before providing information.
34. Changes to This Privacy Policy
Keeping the policy current.
We may update this Privacy Policy when the platform, technology or legal requirements change. Material updates will be published with a revised last-updated date.
